Sustainable weight loss with The Mediterranean Diet

Want to not only lose weight, but build habits which help you maintain healthy weight over the long term? The Mediterranean Diet offers an evidence-based approach to losing weight which focuses on sustainable weight loss.

The Mediterranean Diet is perfect for anyone looking for a gentle approach to losing weight that they can maintain – minus the fad dieting! Mediterranean eating removes the complex rules and restrictions that are so much a part of ‘diet culture’ and offers a flexible way to enjoy food, while prioritising health. More than a diet, it’s a lifestyle which can be adapted to your individual preferences and culture as well as any allergies or intolerances you may have. What’s more, it’s backed by decades of research in improving health outcomes and maintaining weight loss. The Mediterranean diet is naturally abundant in superfoods and healthy approaches to food. Here’s why we love it:

Benefits of the Mediterranean Diet for weight loss and health

  • Emphasis on whole foods: vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, extra-virgin olive oil
  • Balanced meals that naturally reduce cravings and overeating
  • High fibre, nutrient-dense eating pattern to support fullness and steady energy
  • Encourages lean proteins such as fish, chicken, eggs, and plant-based options
  • Supports gut health, heart health, and metabolic wellbeing while losing weight
  • Reduces inflammation and supports healthy blood sugar levels

Consuming a Mediterranean diet assists in lowering blood sugar levels and reducing the risk of chronic health conditions such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes. The high protein and fibre content of a Mediterranean diet also assists in helping you feel fuller for longer.

Dietary support alongside and after weight loss injections

Are you undergoing weight loss injections and want to take the opportunity to optimise your diet? Careful dietary support can support your long term success. Or have you just stopped weight loss injectables and want to ensure you maintain the weight you’ve lost? After appetite returns, it can be helpful to receive additional support from a dietitian to build a balanced, satisfying eating pattern that prevents rebound weight gain. We help arm you with all the education, tools and strategies you need for this next phase. Here’s how we support you during and after weight loss injections:

  • Focus on Mediterranean style habits that support metabolic health and fullness.
  • Education on protein, fibre, and meal structure to stabilise hunger and blood sugars
  • Strategies to manage increased appetite, cravings, or emotional eating after medication
  • Gradual, realistic calorie targets to avoid restrictive dieting (if they want to calorie count)
  • Tailored meal plans to rebuild a healthy relationship with food after relying on reduced appetite
  • Support to overcome muscle loss associated with rapid weight loss – protein and resistance training guidance
  • Monitoring and adjusting nutrition to maintain energy and avoid nutrient deficiencies
  • Tools for mindful eating, portion awareness, and recognising hunger cues

Maintaining weight loss and health after bariatric surgery

Looking for a dietitian’s guidance and support after gastric sleeve or gastric bypass? Or perhaps you’ve undergone gastric band removal, and want as much support as possible to maintain a healthy weight long term? Tree of Life Nutrition offers comprehensive dietary support after bariatric surgery spanning the weeks, months and years following your procedure.

Bariatric-specific strategies

Once solid foods are reintroduced, our bariatric dietitians focus on helping you implement a gentle, sustainable Mediterranean style eating plan. This incorporates tailored protein and hydration goals to prevent deficiencies and support healing.

Our consultations provide strategies to prevent or manage common issues for bariatric patients, such as nausea, vomiting, dumping syndrome, reflux or food intolerance. Recipes and meal ideas are tailored for small portions, and take into account any textural or tolerance issues you may be experiencing.

Optimising bariatric nutrition

After bariatric surgery, it’s vital to monitor your nutrition to maintain health and weight loss. Our individual nutrition plans balance small portions with nutrient density. Consultations with us also ensure you are monitored for nutritional deficiencies such as:

  • iron
  • B12
  • calcium
  • vitamin D
  • protein
  • vitamin B12
  • zinc

In addition, we offer support for building muscle mass and maintaining metabolic rate after rapid weight loss.

Supporting weight loss and preventing weight regain

Tree of Life Nutrition dietitians offer support to reduce grazing that can contribute to weight regain, as well as education on mindful eating. hunger/fullness cues, and portion awareness.

Fasting diets under APD guidance

Are you hoping to try a fasting diet for health reasons or weight loss? Like any restrictive or specialised diet, we don’t recommend going it alone. While there is evidence to support fasting diets for some people, it’s important that you go in with the right advice. Whenever you are restricting calories or food, checking in with a dietitian can help ensure that the diet is right for you, and that it meets your nutritional needs. Our version of fasting diet incorporates the Mediterranean diet for increased health and nutrition.

The Fast 800

The 800kcal diet has become increasingly popular in recent times and mainly consists of three main meals across the day that equal to a total of 800kcal. We have put our own little spin on the popular 800kcal diet and added a Mediterranean flair so you can reap the benefits of increased nutrition and satiety.

5:2 Diet

The 5:2 method allows for five days of regular, healthy eating and two days of ‘fasting’. Typically this looks like five days of regular eating based on your weight and energy expenditure with two days of controlled, lower calorie eating (rather than traditional fasting).

Intermittent Fasting

One of the most common fasting diets is Intermittent Fasting where your eating pattern includes hours of minimal to no food consumption. When we increase the amount of time between meals, our insulin levels go down and our fat cells can release stored sugars and use this as an energy source instead, resulting in weight loss.

Which fasting diet, if any, is right for you? Our dietitians can help you understand more and find the right path forward..
